Using the Library

We continue to recover from a cybersecurity incident that disrupted all library systems and technology. We expect to restore Your Account, search and the catalogue by the end of February. As a result, using the library is a little different right now.

Restoring systems and services across 100 library branches is a complex undertaking. Full and safe recovery is a gradual process, and we're working to ensure full restoration as soon as possible. Thank you for your continued patience. For information about service restoration, read the most recent library service update.

Library cards

New cards

To register for a library card, bring identification with your name and address to any library location. Check the list of identification requirements before going into a branch.

Digital Access Card

We're unable to process new Digital Access Cards at this time.

Expired cards and card renewal

We're unable to process card renewals at this time. However, library cards, including non-resident and Digital Access Cards, won't expire during this time, which means you can continue to borrow physical items and access digital services.

Lost library cards

If your card has been lost or stolen, immediately contact your local branch by phone or in person.

Lending services

Borrowing materials

You're able to borrow items from branches, depending on availability. Plus, you can borrow ebooks, audiobooks, films and music from our digital collections.

Returning materials

Most materials can be returned to any library branch. However, some items must be returned to the branch from which you borrowed them:

Renewing materials

You can renew physical items by going into a branch with the item or calling your branch and providing the barcode number.

Placing and managing holds

Place, manage and cancel holds with staff support by visiting or calling a branch or contacting Answerline at or 416-397-5981. The ability to self-manage holds online won't be possible until we restore the catalogue and Your Account at the end of February.

Late fees

There's no need to worry about late fees! We moved to a fine-free model in June 2022.
